Magazine Update…
When RodMaker Magazine debuted in early 1998, it consisted of a small page number, black & white publication. Mid-way through 1998, I doubled the page count. At the start of 1999, I added a full color cover and full color photo gallery for the centerfold. But the bulk of the magazine remained in black & white.
While I would have preferred a full color publication from the very start, each page of full color photographs required an additional cost of $900… per page! Remember, we’re not talking about a low-end newspaper type publication – RodMaker is a high quality publication produced at 300 line screen and on heavy, glossy, bright white media. It’s already expensive enough to produce without an additional $30,000 or so per issue for full color on every single page. But, that’s about to change…
Beginning with the Volume 14 #2 issue, due out in April 2011, RodMaker Magazine will move to a 100% full color publication. Even better for our readers – there will be NO increase in subscription price! That makes RodMaker, already the biggest bang for your rod building buck, an even better value once again.
And there’s more… later this summer we’ll either increase the page count once again, or move to a monthly publication. Stay tuned!

Uh, that leaves the competition playing catch up from even further back. Really, good to hear. Seriously, would love to see a monthly edition of Rodmaker.
You da’ man!
The world’s best rod building mag just got even better!
Getting back into rod building after twenty years out of it and thought I was subscribing to the Rodcrafters Journal magazine. Discovered my mistake when I got the first copy and saw RODMAKER across the top but was surprised at how nice your mag is. Decided to stay with it and have been very happy. We never had anything like this in the old days.
Yes but….how much more will you be charging for this little bit of extra color photography???
As noted in the blog entry, there will be no increase in the regular yearly subscription price. That will remain true even with the U.S. Postal Service increase set for April of 2011.
RodMaker has always been the highest quality yet least expensive rod building publication available, and it just became even more so with the addition of full color on every page.
I BUY THE MAGAZINE FOR THE INFORMATION IT CONTAINS. NOT REALLY IMPORTANT IF IS HAS ALL COLOR OR SOME. RM IS THE TOP MAGAZINE IN THE ROD BUILDING FIELD FAR AS THAT GOES. BUT IF IT COSTS NO MORE THAN COUNT ME IN FOR MORE COLOR. IT IS ALREADY A FIND MAGAZINE WITH CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS AND GOOD LAYOUT. BUT THAT IS NOT WHY I BUY IT.
You continue to improve and add more and more to the mag without raising the price. Not sure how you do it but wish more would follow your lead. Your mag is still the best bang for the buck in the rod building world. You could charge twice the price and it would still be a great deal.
