It All Started Here…
This past week I sold the last back issue of RodMaker Volume 10 #6. It brought back a lot of memories and for good reasons…
This was the issue that launched carbon-skin/foam-core grips to the rod building universe. No such thing existed for fishing rods until this issue hit the stands all the way back in 2004. Andy Dear wrote the article on the carbon skinning process and I wrote the article on making the urethane foam cores. Combined, this was the start of an industry revolution in terms of fishing rod grips. Today, hundreds of thousands, perhaps even millions of these grips have been installed on commercial and custom fishing rods, spawning entire product lines and even companies that specialize in such grips. Dozens of instructional videos on making these grips now fill social media for custom rod builders. But it all started here…
Time flies when we’re having fun! Keep having fun, Tom! And congratulations!
Ross
I can remember seeing carbon tube Tennessee grips on spinning rods but they were just straight tubes mounted on hard arbors. When this issue came out it blew my mind! Now you could make custom carbon grips in any shape you wanted and beat the weight of cork! Your magazine has shaped the entire fishing rod industry for two or three decades now. Thanks and keep up the great work!
Tom,
I’m having a difficult time inquiring about my subscription that I paid for in November 2024. I still haven’t received any issues and wanted to make sure you received my payment and that I’m on the mailing list. I also sent payment for back issues but haven’t received anything on those either. I’m really looking forward to receiving these and have heard great things about it. Can you please check on this for me, please. Thank you, sir.
