15 Years

It was about this time 15 years ago when I published the very first issue of RodMaker. Several of the trade publications have made note of this fact and given us some nice comments recently. Here’s the latest:

I have all but just a few copies of the mag. I still get a kick out of people on the ‘net thinking they have just invented a new technique when I can remember reading about it a decade or more ago in an early issue of Rodmaker. Dragonscale wraps, birch bark grips, do-it-yourself rod grip flocking, carbon skinning, and many more were all covered in RM years and years ago and stolen from there. It is a virtual encyclopedia of rod building information.

In some cases this is very true. In other cases, not quite. To be fair, some folks without prior knowledge of many of the magazine articles may come up with a technique on their own which they believe is completely new. In such cases they didn’t really “steal” anything, they just innocently duplicated an existing technique.

I have always appreciated the little extras the magazine provides to its readers. The perks like the decal we got. The free reception and food and prizes at the Rodmaker recep at the Expo. The center staple binding so the magazine lays flat when you are working from an article inside. The mailing cover that keeps the covers from getting torn up. Only wish it was monthly instead of bi-monthly. Still the best rod building information on the planet.
